Cotton Jones Basket Ride: “Gotta Cheer Up”
November 13th, 2008 by Matt

Again, to recap: Cotton Jones is actually Michael Nau of Page France writing under a different band name. Page France are on indefinite hiatus, but it really doesn’t matter since the Cotton Jones stuff is kissing cousins to the previous band’s sound. They’re releasing their full length Paranoid Cocoon on Suicide Squeeze next year.
MP3: Cotton Jones – Gotta Cheer Up
When I saw Cotton Jones earlier this year, I couldn’t help but think that Michael must’ve really gotten into the doors since the last time I saw him play. Lots of the Cotton Jones material really reminds me of Jim Morrison — however, instead of Jimmy’s often dour outlook, we’re given it through Michael’s eyes. Instead of “man, what a drag,” Mike offers his songs as a matter of fact. It’s not his opinion really, it’s just the way it is. And sometimes he needs his own medicine, because on “Gotta Cheer Up” it sounds like he’s telling it straight and he’s also the one who needs to hear it. Lucky for him, a message like “cheer up” goes over a lot better when it’s wrapped inside a great tune.
