Sparks: “Good Morning”

October 9th, 2008

Well this is an Of Montreal sort of day, apparently. When I first heard Skeletal Lamping, the first band I thought of was Sparks’ early work — mostly for the approach he’s been taking to his vocals and production. Now, as I’m getting ready for my trip to New York to see Of Montreal, Sparks’ new album Exotic Creatures of the Deep lands in my lap. It’s a great mix of electroclash and psych-pop.

MP3: Sparks - Good Morning
“Good Morning” is apparently about waking up next to a (presumably) Russian girl, with no memory of what you two did last night. After verses upon verses of elation, God-thanking and marriage-pondering on our protagonists’ part, the song takes a humorous turn when his girl walks out on him. Unfortunately he can’t quite process that it was a one night stand. He starts saying “good morning” in a few differnent languages before she presumably answers in her own, leaving him to ask “Does ‘dasvedanya’ really mean good morning?”

Fun fact: Of Montreal and Sparks now have the same publicist! Now that’s synergy!

But I can’t close it out without including the video for the song that most reminds me of everything Of Montreal have done since 2004. “Wonder Girl” is great and this live performance is a great lunch-time treat.
