These United States announce November tour, three KY shows

If These United States’ album Crimes doesn’t do well, it’s not the band’s fault. The album’s great and they’ve been touring in support of it for a while now. In fact, after only a few weeks off since their last tour, TUS will be hitting the road again in November. Included in those dates are three much-appreciated Kentucky shows, on at the Rudyard Kipling in Louisville, one at Al’s Bar in Lexington and one at the Southgate House.

[VIDEO/MP3] Wilco debut “Wilco the Song” on Colbert

Last night Wilco debuted (and retired) a song written specially for Colbert. The song’s titled is a play on all the “Joe the Plumber” nonsense going on, but the song is actually one of the best they’ve written in the past few years.

Thanks to the folks at Via Chicago for the MP3. If you’re having trouble with the video above, check below for the Youtube version. Go here to watch the interview with Jeff Tweedy where he says he asked Obama in 2005 if he could go to the inauguration and Obama said “If Hilary lets us.”

A.C. Newman: “There Are Maybe Ten or Twelve”

Stereogum premiered the first new song from AC Newman’s 2009 album Get Guilty. I was hoping he saved some thunder for this release after the disappointing last New Pornographers record, but based on this song alone, I’m not so sure he did.

MP3: A.C. Newman – There Are Maybe Ten or Twelve
I’ve got to say that I’m not really feeling this one. The songs on Slow Wonder set the bar so high, from the quick pop of “Secretarial” to the strong string section in “The Town Halo,” that I’m having a hard time buying this an equal follow-up. It’s an excellently produced song, but not that impressively written.

Preacher to finally get made into a movie?

/Film is reporting that American Beauty director Sam Mendes is going to be helming the adaptation of the Preacher comic series into a film. I’m finishing up the series this week — it’s a long one — and all I can say to Mendes is “good luck.” It’s a 60+ issue series with more back story than Lost.

Preacher follows Jesse Custer, a southern reverend who winds up host to the spawn of a demon and an angel. Possibly now more powerful than God, Custer goes on a mission to find Him and give him a piece of his mind. Until he gets everything sorted out, his only power is the Word of God, which makes mortals and angels alike obey him. Oh yeah, and his best friend is a vampire and John Wayne’s ghost talks to him.

The only thing left to say is…Hey Hollywood, adapt Scud!

Local Natives: “Airplane”

So my friend and former co-worker Libby called me on Monday to share two things: she had been drinking with Lemmy from Motorhead that weekend, and I had to check out “Local Natives.” Now, I haven’t talked to her in a little while, but I’m always convinced when an old friend calls me to suggest a band. Well surprise surprise, they’re actually quite good.

MP3: Local Natives – Airplanes
There’s so much to love about “Airplane.” The piano sounds like something the Cold War Kids might chop up for their blend of broken r&b. The drums in the first minute of the song would fit in nicely with Animal Collective or Grizzly Bear. Or you could go for the whole package. That’s my pick, at least.

Local Natives on Myspace

Tina Fey on Conan was about the cutest thing ever. Usually when people go on the show and talk about their kids, it’s the most boring thing. But she was just too great.

Wilco debut two new songs at Bridge School Benefit

Thanks to Muzzle of Bees for pointing out that Wilco shared two new songs at this year’s Bridge School Benefit. Add that to “One Wing,” “Sunny Feeling” and whatever song this is a video of and you’ve got about half an album!

MP3: Wilco – New Song 2

Wilco have apparently finished demoing their next abum and might have the finished project ready for release next year.

[BOOTLEG] Of Montreal acoustic on MPR

As I said before, Of Montreal tend to do great work on Minnesota Public Radio. Maybe it’s because Kevin used to live there, or maybe it’s because Prince still does — either way, it’s always something to look forward to.
