Frank Zappa: “My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama”

September 26th, 2008 by Matt

Sometimes my brain operates at a Curb Your Enthusiasm level of awkwardness. For instance, I occasionally worry about how I’ll be introduced to music because I’d later have to answer the question “how did you get into that band” with an embarrassing story. I guess it’s similar to how I recognized John Vanderslice in the men’s room at Monolith, but waited until outside to introduce myself just because I couldn’t stand to have met him in the men’s room.

Anyway, I heard that Zappa Plays Zappa album earlier this year and was impressed. But then I thought “ugh, what a lame way to get into Frank Zappa.” Luckily for me, it didn’t click then; but it sure did today. I heard “My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama” on WRFL today and fell in love.

MP3: Frank Zappa – My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama
The first time I heard this song, I thought it was kind of a sarcastic response to Frank’s FCC troubles and rock’s generally bad image from some older folks. Sort of a “yeah, rock and roll totally makes me want to kill people.” But now that I’m listening to it at home where I can focus on the lyrics, I’m convinced that, within the song, he’s serious. Strangely that makes me even more attracted to the narrative. It’s almost like some 60s B movie complete with long-haired rocker sneaking in the back door to see his girlfriend, wholesome parents and a guitar that acts as Frank’s evil side. Someone get me Ed Wood on the phone.
