Nancy Sinatra: “Run For Your Life” (Beatles cover)

September 18th, 2008 by Matt

My friend Ben played this on his radio show the other day and it really grabbed me. I’ve been a Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood (the producer of Boots and writer of “These Boots are Made for Walkin’”) fan for a while, but had strangely never heard Boots in its entirety. Strange. Thanks to Matt for the MP3!

MP3: Nancy Sinatra – Run For Your Life
Good God, Lee Hazelwood is a great producer! I’d go so far as to say that Boots‘ production played a huge part in shaping pop-rock of the 60s and early 70s. “Run For Your Life” in specific combines a jangly guitar beginning like something the Mamas and Papas would have died for, with a horn section that acts as both a gentle backing for some sections and a wild exclamation for others. And even though Nancy Sinatra isn’t the world’s greatest singer, she really sells the song — better than the Beatles and arguably better than anyone else could.
