Jarvis Cocker @ Pitchfork 7.19.08

July 23rd, 2008

In all likelihood I’ll never get to see David Bowie perform live. The poor guy is getting up there in years and it’s just not likely that he’ll be playing anywhere near me soon. What I did get with Jarvis Cocker’s performance, however, was pretty darn close.

I had no idea what to expect from Jarvis. I was only marginally familiar with his solo stuff and had never seen so much as a video of him in concert. But from the moment he stepped on stage in his skinny tie and big glasses, I knew he was going to bring a great show along with him.

Jarvis’ first song was apparently a new one; it hit hard and was a definite highlight of the festival. He did more jumps in one song that I think I’ve seen any band do during one set. If anyone’s got a recording of that song, definitely hit me up.

In addition to some rocking songs, Jarvis also entertained us with some of that infamous British humor. After his microphone started dipping downward, he made a joke about how it was working backward than how he figured: he thought it was supposed to gradually get more erect through the show. Later he told us about his reoccurring nightmare before big shows where he’s getting a hotdog and someone stops him on the street and says “hey, aren’t you supposed to be playing a show right now?”

More photos after the jump…
