De Novo Dahl @ CD Central’s July 4th Party

July 5th, 2008

De Novo Dahl put on a fantastic show yesterday downtown as part of CD Central’s Independence Day party at Phoenix Park. They trotted out all the hits from their new record Move Every Muscle, Make Every Sound as well as some old classics like “Mishka.”

I’ve gotta say, though, my favorite part of De Novo Dahl’s show is quickly becoming the impromptu R&B songs by keyboardist Matthew Hungate. At Bonnaroo he busted out one about the importance of tuning while Joel did the same. This go-around he did a crooning, lounge-ish song about the merch they had for sale. Miraculously it not only avoided being preachy, but was funny enough to drive several people over to the merch booth.

In the last half of their set, De Novo Dahl worked in two of their nicest covers. First they trotted out a much-appreciated cover of Rod Stewart’s “Young Turks” — you know, the one with the “young hearts, beat free tonight” chorus. Next was their cover of the Speed Racer theme, which just gets better each time I hear it. I hope they still trot that one out when I’m forty.
