So I’m writing this at 11pm somewhere in Tennessee — I’ve apparently stumbled upon one of the benefits to finally owning a laptop. Tonight I’ll be sleeping on a floor in Greenville, SC (where my co-roadtripper just graduated college) and then making my way over to Athens, Georgia tomorrow. The one positive side of getting to spend seven-plus hours in a car is that I’m finally able to wear down a bit on the stack of promos that have been sitting on my desk for weeks. One gem I’ve uncovered is Love Psychedelico’s This Is Love Psychedelico.
MP3: Love Psychedelico - Standing Bird
I hear this song as Mates of State on acid (with a guitar) doing a psychedelic cover of Grizzly Bear’s “Knife.” The chord progression is similar, but the thing that really sells it is that the “ooh yeah yeah” at the beginning follows the same “wha ah-ah oww” vocal riff from the Grizzies’ hit. But similarities aside (it’s a simple/popular chord progression for verses — check the Undertones’ “Teenage Kicks”), the song does more than required to give your brain a pop-psych kiss.
