The Cool Kids: “What It Is”
June 3rd, 2008 by Matt

I just snagged a copy of the Cool Kids’ new record The Bake Sale. Coming on the heels of Wale’s mixtape (which just keeps getting better), this makes for a hip hop heavy week so far.
MP3: The Cool Kids – What It Is
My clearest memory of the Cool Kids’ show at Gorilla vs Booze was that there was virtually no difference in their attitude on and off the stage. I talked to them a little before their show and a lot after it and they seemed just as psyched to have some people wanting to talk to them outside as they were to have a room full of sweaty hipsters ready to jump when they gave the word. The Bake Sale reflects their non-pretentious, non-combative, joyful attitude pretty well. “What It is” is possibly the best summation of their tongue-in-cheek celebration of their celebrity. With no notice, the Kids stop mid-verse (a stop dramatized in concert) and say “Freeze! Now take my picture.”
I just realized that the Cool Kids are playing Cincinnati this Thursday June 5th. If gas prices drop or if I can find someone to car pool with, I might try to make that drive. Check their tour dates at the above Myspace link.
