Wale: “The Opening Title Sequence”

June 2nd, 2008

In the past few months, Wale has slowly turned me into a not only a fan, but a rabid one. You know the type — the ones who grab you by the collar and shove a mix CD into your hand while talking so quickly that spittle flies from their lips. Well, consider this the internet version of that. This is me grabbing you by the collar. Here Wale provides the mix — it’s up to you to provide the spittle.

MP3: Wale - The Opening Title Sequence
Let’s start by agreeing that this isn’t the best song on the mixtape. It’s got fantastic tracks like “The Feature Heavy Song” (which you probably remember as “Back in the Go Go”), “The Freestyle” which samples the instrumentals from Jay Z’s “Roc Boys,” and “The Crazy” which features some of the riskiest and best production I’ve heard in a while. What “The Opening Title Sequence” is, however, is awesome. It captures Wale’s laid back attitude, fantastic wit and penchant for calling out modern hip hop culture and the “ringtone rappers” that make up so much of the radio today. All that and it’s backed by a slowed down Seinfeld theme song and several Jerryisms starting with “What’s the deal with….?” The real gems are at the end of the record (”The Hype,” “The Bmore Club Slam,” etc), but this is a great intro to a great mixtape.

Wale just signed to Interscope, so look for a debut full-length on the horizon. Until then, download the Mixtape About Nothing at Elitaste.com
