Cold War Kids: “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” (Tom Waits)

May 15th, 2008

I figured regular readers and those as pop-leaning as myself might need a cleanser after that Torche song. Here’s a cover by a band I support of a singer that I wholeheartedly support.

I was playing guitar with a friend the other day when I remembered how much fun this one is to play. I’ve always thought of it as one of the most important/best/noteworthy Tom Waits songs and have never understood why it’s not like a national anthem by now. I think part of the reason I realized it’s so much fun to perform is because of the energy put into it by the Cold War Kids in this recording. This is from Cold War Kids’ free online release Acoustic at the District, which was a laid-back set of covers that I believe they did for charity.

The Ramones have a studio version of the song as well (Waits returned the favor by covering “Jackie and Judy”).
