Ivana XL: “The King”

April 9th, 2008 by Matt

Ivana XL posted a few new songs on her Myspace in the past month. Regular readers may remember that I’m kind of a fan of hers. To my knowledge she’s still labelless, so wax-pressers take notice!

MP3: Ivana XL – The King
If you judged Ivana’s life entirely on her songs, you must think that this poor woman spends all her free time being broken up with (however, if you judge it on her photos, you’d probably not reach that conclusion). “The King” is another one in Ivana’s post-breakup “talk yourself out of depression” songs, and sad topic aside, I really, really enjoy it. She brings a kind of raw, real world feeling to her music. Sure, Cat Power might put it more poetically when she’s feeling blue, but Ivana makes it more real. Who else could sum up her dashed relationship hopes with lines like: “So f*** having babies and rocking them to sleep / And going to the movies and drinking martinis. I don’t want you anymore; you were never that good, baby.”

There are a few more new ones on her myspace. Hit up “Money” and “Jesus Prayer” if you want a head-start on something I’ll probably post next Ivana mention.
