[MusicNOW] Dirty Projectors @ Memorial Hall 4.4.08

April 5th, 2008

Taking the stage, Dave Longstreth asked a simple, if not unusual, question: “How many of you know the Foreigner song ‘Hot Blooded?’” After a smattering of applause, he continued: “If you had to pick a line from that song, what would it be?” Some rumblings were heard before someone finally yelled out “I’ve got a fever of one-hundred and three!” Dave then went on to explain that the girls in the band, Amber and Angel, actually did have a fever of 103 and would be toughing it out for the good of the team.

I was told later that a well-lit stage in a seated theater is not the way to see Dirty Projectors. Well it’s news to me. In spite of the sickness, Dirty Projectors were fantastic. Dave performs like a living Pixies song; he stood relatively still through most songs, but would jump into a thrashing fit with no notice. It was like someone slung a guitar over an active volcano. And if he hadn’t told me, I might not have known the girls were sick. Their beautiful backing harmonies were spot-on (even though Amber kept having to pop cough drops). We were also treated to two new songs, both of which (especially the first) sounded amazing.
