Woo! The show that I never expected to happen was just as good in actuality as it was on paper. A surprise “wait… they’re playing SXSW?” show announcement from the Clipse a few weeks ago resulted in a lot of anxiousness on my part. I jammed their newest Mixtape on the plane and found ways to weasel in Clipse quotes into my everyday live (”We’ve got a great hotel room… and we got it for cheap!”).

Thursday treated us to not only the Clipse duo, but the fearsome foursome of the Re-Up Gang. It sounds amazing in theory (and pretty much was), but truthfully I’d have preferred it if they’d stuck to just Malice and Pusha T. The stage was too cramped for four bodies, especially since the other two guys are absolutely giants. But that’s just me nit-picking. The show was fantastic, and I think Clipse felt the same way. They occasionally shared glances of surprise when the audience already knew what to shout out (”R.E.U.P!” “G.A.N.G!”) and looked understandably happy when we flipped out for the mixtape tracks. In they end they brought it to a “Grindin” halt and left us wanting more, but perfectly satisfied at the same time. Bar, consider yourself once again raised by the Clipse.
