We Are Scientists: “Rockstar” (Nickelback cover)

I’m leaving for SXSW now. I was hoping that We Are Scientists would be there in some capacity or another, but it looks like I’ll probably spend another year WAS-less. Oh well. This fantastic Nickelback cover that they did on Radio 1 helps ease the pain slightly.

As ironic covers go, this one is pretty unique. What at first seems like a straight-forward take on one of the more “American” songs written as of late turns midway into a parody of itself. After verse upon verse of rock star wants, the bridge winds up with someone (Chris?) playing the voice of reason to Keith’s dreams: “I think you need to set your goals a little more reasonably… I got a cousin who works at Subway… I think you’d make a great sandwich artist.”

Last go-around they covered Sigur Ros — and did so quite well. Could this choice be any further from the last?
