Apparently (read: according to wikipedia) this was recorded by Patience (age 14) and Prudence (11) after their bandleader father brought them into the recording studio. They cut this cover and it was released soon after as a single. I probably would never have crossed its path had it not been for the John Winters’ Valentines album. It’s crammed full of weird “love” songs, but this is one of the old, genuinely sweet ones that he included as well.
MP3: Patience & Prudence - Tonight You Belong To Me (Gene Clark)
I picture this one playing in some ice cream parlor in a 50s nostalgia flick like the beginning of Pleasantville or something. It’s sugary sweet and really plays up the innocence of the song. It’s easy to see how a song with the lines “I know you belong to somebody else, but tonight you belong to me” could take a turn for the amoral, but these girls keep it G rated — and I love them for it.
