I’ve been following Juno since /Film talked it up many months ago. Now that I’ve seen it (twice this week!), I can say that my faith was not ill-placed. For sure one of the must-see movies for everyone out there. To celebrate, here’s some (non-Kimya Dawson) songs.
Songs for Juno
MP3: 13th Floor Elevators - You Don’t Know (How Young You Are)
Quite simply, Juno works because of the age of the characters. Writer Diablo Cody summed up the difference between Juno and Knocked up best in a Filter interview: “[Knocked Up] is about assuming responsibility, mine is about dodging it.”
MP3: The Awkward Stage - Heaven is for Easy Girls
I’ll never hear the phrase “sexually active” without laughing again. Juno and Superbad captured the high school sexual mindset like few movies I’ve ever seen.
MP3: Mixel Pixel - You’re the Kind of Girl
I still can’t decide if that “I thought you were the kind of girl who knew when to say when” / “I don’t really know what kind of girl I am” exchange in Juno is cheesy or the most important line of the movie. Oh well, I’ll just say it’s a good one and go with it.
MP3: Music Magic - So You Say You Lost Your Baby (Gene Clark cover)
I was happy that the Sonic Youth cover of the Carpenters played during the film, but just the tiniest bit sad that that obscure song got shot into popular conscientiousness. I’ll make up for that with this Music Magic cover of Gene Clark’s “So You Say You Lost Your Baby.” Not literally about adoption and infants, but hey, it’ll do.
MP3: The Broken West - Baby on My Arm
I went ahead and included this for two reasons (not the one you’d think). First of all, it’s mostly acoustic, so it fits in well with the soundtrack of the movie. Secondly, it works well for the two main couples in the film in very different ways.
MP3: The Magic Whispers - Two Mothers
I loved Vanessa’s character. I thought she was handled quite well through the film. I’m not sure how I feel about Mark, but we’ll just focus on the two mothers in the film — one willing and unable, the other unwilling and able.
MP3: 22-20s - Baby Brings Bad News
I love how Juno quite obviously realizes the direness of her situation, but never really lets it out. It’s so unrealistic that it’s completely how most people in the world work.
MP3: The Replacements - Bastards of Young
I just had to do it…
THUNDERCATS ARE GOOOOO!
