Okay: “Tragedy” & “My”

January 7th, 2008 by Matt

Here’s my new favorite darling. I can’t find much information on Okay other than that it’s the recording pseudonym of Marty Anderson of the band Dilute. Here’s one instance where I’m more than happy to forfeit background knowledge for mindless appreciation. Okay already looks like 2008′s ultimate lo-fi indie pop record.

MP3: Okay – Tragedy
MP3: Okay – My
Okay reminds me of Michel Gondry’s film Science of Sleep. It’s very dreamy, bare-bones, confused and lovely. Also, I picture Marty Anderson composing the songs like how the main characters of Science of Sleep make their animations — by arranging what they have laying around into celebrations of life. Okay occasionally sounds like a Bedroom Beirut minus the Balkan (check “My”). It’s obvious that a lot of work has been put into making something sound simple, and I appreciate that. It’s incredibly intricate, but never sounds overly busy. I cannot stop this record once it’s started; it’s simply a great piece of music.

In other news, you can now cast your ballot for the 2008 Bloggies! I’ve been nominated two years in a row (Best Teen… and Best Music…), but have never won.
