12 Days of Mixmas: Day 13
Danny Seim of Menomena

Ah, lucky Day 13 of Mixmas. It’s hard to believe Christmas has already come and gone. Similarly, it’s hard to believe that I’ve been listening to Menomena’s Friend and Foe for over a year now. In that seemingly short span of time, it’s quickly become one of my favorite records of the new decade. It should be no surprise, then, that it’s a huge honor to have the fellas of Menomena represented at Mixmas.

“The Top Five Best Songs Featuring the Word ‘Na’ Repeated Over and Over and Over and Over and Over and Over” by Danny Seim of Menomena

There’s nothing fun about driving a beat-up old van across the country on a rock tour. Sure, sometimes exciting things happen like when you hit a bird and then discover it imbedded in your radiator 200 miles later. But even with those little happy accidents, there’s really nothing to make a state like Montana fly by any faster. Well that is, of course, unless you have a loaded iPod.

Here’s what Brent and I came up with along the treacherous snowy stretch from Missoula, Montana (by the way, great city… Just don’t eat the Thai food) to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho:

MP3: The Beatles – Hey Jude
A no-brainer. Just make sure you have the real version of this song and not the one on the recent “Love” remix album. The remix starts out familiar enough, but then mashes into some kind of Girl Talk thing at the end and makes Brent want to crash the van out of shock and horror.

Beatles Video!” contest at 5:57 – HERE

MP3: Blink 182 – All the Small Things
Why is this song on my iPod? BECAUSE THE REST OF BLINK 182’s ENTIRE CATALOGUE IS ON THERE, TOO! What else am I supposed to fill up 8000 gigabytes of storage space with? There are only so many Neutral Milk Hotel albums out there, you know. Extra points if you can name another song in the entire universe that prominently features the word “commiserating”.

Ok, so this video is still kinda funny – HERE

Steam – Kiss Him Goodbye
For starters, here’s a revelation: There was a band called “Steam”! Secondly, Steam did this song first, not The Nylons, who merely performed the 80s version that I have on my iPod (and in my heart, 4 lyfe). And finally, Steam’s lip-synching abilities make Britney Spears look like Mili Vanilli.

MP3: Journey – Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’
Another Journey classic; another classic journey… Into the emotive realm of Steve Perry’s multi-tracked tenor. The end of this song always leaves me with tears in my eyes. It’s just so vast, so gorgeous. No one – not even Bobby McFerrin – will ever make a-capella vocals sound this beautiful in rock music again. Period.

MP3: Roxette – The Look
This song by Roxette not only features some killer “Na Na Na’s” in the main hook, it also proudly showcases The Best Muted Pause For Dramatic Effect This Side of Fugazi’s “Waiting Room” (TBMPFDETSoF”WR”). Roxette and Fugazi together in the same sentence! Thank you very much, my work here is done.
