12 Days of Mixmas: Day 12
Josh Grier of Tapes n Tapes

Merry Christmas! While this isn’t the end of Mixmas 07, it is a time to unwind a bit. Luckily Josh Grier from Tapes n Tapes is here to help us relax … with math?? I promise it’s better than it sounds. Actually, it’s great! Here’s Josh supplying us with his favorite songs with numbers in their title. Speaking of albums (and poor segues), Tapes n Tapes have their new album slated for an early ’08 release. Keep your ears open for that!

“Songs with numbers in their title (that aren’t by Prince)” by Josh Grier of Tapes n Tapes

I’m a big fan of numbers. I’m a big fan of songs. When you put the two of them together, I’m pretty much in heaven. So I decided to put together a mix of my favorite songs that have numbers in their title. The only rule that I put I gave myself, was that none of the songs could be prince songs, because he kind of bastardizes numbers (“i would die 4 u”). So it here goes, the best songs with numbers in their title:

MP3: Radiohead – 15 Step
When it came to Radiohead, it was a close call between this and “2+2 =5”. “2+2=5”, is all about the math, which I’m a sucker for. But in the end, “15 Step” won out, because it’s got kids cheering and wicked drum and bass parts.

MP3: The Decemberists – 16 Military Wives
Almost every verse in this song is filled with numbers (“14 cannibal kings”, “50 celebrity minds”, “16 military wives”, etc). The music keeps up with all the numbers, though. There’s a couple killers horn breaks, some crazy organ business, and just like almost every other Decemberists’ song, a really great melody.

The Strokes – 12:51
You can’t have time without numbers. Right? Right. To be honest, “2:45” by Elliott Smith may be a better song in the “songs about time of day category”, but it didn’t really fit in with the overall up tempo theme of the mix, so the strokes won out. But really, everybody wins. Because not only do you get Julian Casablancas singing about “getting 40’s” and Nick Valensi making his guitar sound like an 80’s synth, but you also get a bonus super nostalgic “Tron” video…and “Tron” rules.

MP3: M.I.A. – 10 Dollar
“What can I get for 10 dollar? Anything you want”. I often sit around and think about how nice it would be if only this were true. There’s a lot of pretty sweet stuff I’d get if everything were 10 dollars. But let’s face it, 10 dollars just doesn’t cut it like it used to. It’s a real shame.

MP3: Jay-Z – 99 Problems
What can i say about this song that hasn’t already been said? Nothing, I guess.
