12 Days of Mixmas: Day 1
Scott Carney of Wax Fang

Mixmas time again! The first day is a double-header, with Ivana representing far off lands of New York and Scott holding it down for Kentucky.

MP3: Wax Fang – Sweet Bloody Murder

Every year there’s a mix that completely knocks me on my tuckus. So far, this is that mix for 2007. Wax Fang are a wildly enjoyable band out of Louisville, Kentucky. Their new record La La Land is good stuff, and it was an honor to have some fellow Kentuckians contribute. Now prepare yourself, because here comes the craziest theme ever.

“5 Songs I Hope Never to Hear Should Someone Ever Slip LSD Into My Drink” by Scott Carney of Wax Fang

I should preface this list by saying I took LSD in high school enough times to both enjoy its mind expanding benefits and nearly destroy any chance I had to become a functioning member of society. I had experiences so terrible and residual that I hold them primarily responsible for the anxiety issues that have plagued my adult life. Needless to say, I in no way recommend taking this drug. However, I do very much enjoy its effects on culture and the music that was influenced by experimenting it. Oh, Life, you are so full of irony!

MP3: Krzysztof Penderecki – Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima
Hearing this freaks me out when I’m SOBER. Imagine a composition as terrifying as Flight of the Valkyries is triumphant. Comprised of 52 stringed instruments playing a score based on symbols as opposed to standard notation, it creates the kind of sonic horrorscape you’d expect to hear at a slaughterhouse, in the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, or, say, at a Republican National Convention. Someday, they may rename this piece Threnody to the Supporters of the Bush Administration.

MP3: The Beatles – Revolution 9
Listening to this composite of samples and tape loops recalls the way I felt the first time I watched that scene in the Black Lodge in the final episode of Twin Peaks. That is to say, incredibly uneasy. Not the way I want to feel on LSD. “How’s Annie,” anyone?

MP3: Velvet Underground – The Black Angel’s Death Song
MP3: Velvet Underground – European Son
These songs are a one-two punch of anxiety inducing cauliflower ear candy.

THE BLACK ANGEL’S DEATH SONG is a fusion of screeching violins, cat-like hissing, and wavering tempos that provide a lovely backdrop to Lou Reed’s rant about bleeding mouths and mutilated rats, amongst other things. Then, for the first few bars of EUROPEAN SON, you think you just might have escaped the Wrath of Reed, until he chimes in, “You killed your European Son,” and the whole death theme comes right back at’cha. Another thirty seconds go by, a glass shatters and then there you are again for another six and a half or so minutes, as Lou and Co. make a good old-fashioned ruckus, the kind I don’t ever want to hear on acid.

Lou Reed – Metal Machine Music, I-IV (Pick One)
What is it about Lou Reed that he makes music that I really wouldn’t want to hear should I ever accidentally ingest acid enough to include him on a list of songs I wouldn’t want to hear while on acid not once, not twice, but three times? The man certainly has a talent for making me uncomfortable. Thanks, Lou, but no thanks.

MP3: Bobby McFerrin – Don’t Worry, Be Happy
Of all the songs on this list, I think this might be the one that sends me over the Point of No Return. All those positive messages! All that happiness! All that a cappella! Make it stop!! Please, make it stop!!!
