Apostle of Hustle: “I Want a New Drug”

November 26th, 2007

I mean really, how can you not get super excited at the mere idea of Apostle of Hustle covering Huey Lewis and the News? I recently watched American Psycho for the first time since it came out and am even more into Huey than I used to be. I have no shame in enjoying his music. Even less shame in enjoying this Apostle of Hustle cover.

MP3: Apostle of Hustle - I Want a New Drug
I wonder if Apostle of Hustle had some Eternal Sunshine-type operation to take out their memory of what this song originally sounded like. It has the vibe of people who not only tried to translate it into a new sound, but also people who approached it with fresh ears and an open mind. And though the Ghostbusters*-esque riff has been removed from this version, that doesn’t mean it’s not wonderfully catchy in a stoned-out sort of way.

*which was written by Ray Parker Jr, not Ray Park Jr, as pointed out to me by my good friend Elizabeth. Sidenote: yes, I know that Huey beat Ray by a few months.
