The Flaming Lips: “Be My Head”

November 14th, 2007 by Matt

It rained all yesterday and ruined my ability to love anything besides what I already knew. After wearing out that Yeasayer remix (how good is that thing, seriously?), I enjoyed this fantastic tune.

MP3: The Flaming Lips – Be My Head
Is it wrong that I consider this to be one of the most romantic songs the Flaming Lips have ever written? If you look at it in a weird light, the song almost sounds like a marriage proposal in bizzarro-world. Think about it. Wayne admits he’s not complete and doesn’t work well without his partner. It’s kind of cute in a Tim Burton on acid sort of way. Plus it’s got the added bonus of having one of the Lips’ most repeatable choruses. Though it seems largely nonsense at first, that won’t stop you from wanting to shout “be my head, and I’ll be yours!” as you walk down the streets.

If you ask me, this isn’t the best Flaming Lips song. It is, however, the best example of what they do best. At its heart, “Be My Head” is a sweet pop song that’s been layered with fuzz, weirdness and toned-down psychedelia. It’s sort of like what Jesus and Mary Chain got famous for doing, but the Lips make sure the pop side is a little more pushed to the front. It’s catchy, freaky and challenging. In short, it’s a good glimpse into the art of a great band.
