American Gangster had the distinction of being the only film of the past ten years that was a part of my unofficially themed “gangster film” week. I knocked out several classics: Goodfellas, both original and second Godfather films, and Scarface. After realizing the pattern I’d created, I couldn’t help but wonder if American Gangster had earned the right to stand up with some of the best films ever made. I confess I never came up with a concrete answer, but I know one thing for sure — this is a really good movie.
