Wilco are one of the few bands I’ve seen who are able to start at the top and climb steadily upwards.
Voodoo marked my fourth live experience with the band, and by far the best of the bunch. Sure, they didn’t have the set length that their Louisville show did, but they made up for it with intensity. “Misunderstood” opened the set with the kind of punch normally reserved for the end of a show, but no one was complaining. Setlist highlights included “Casino Queen” (first time I’d heard it live), “Handshake Drugs” and my always-favorite “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.”
But the clear winner and perfect cap to a wonderful trip was the one I called all along: Mermaid Avenue‘s “Hoodoo Voodoo.” The guitar duel between Nels “I’ll make the guitar sound however I want” Cline and Pat “I’m also quite good at guitar” Sansone was undoubtedly one of the best concert-going experiences of the year for me.
