I feel like this is a good “yeah” song to end on. I’m coming back from New Orleans today hopefully in time for a nice long nap and lots of photo uploading.
MP3: The Magnetic Fields – Yeah! Oh, Yeah!
This song, like much of Stephin Merritt’s work, absolutely kills me. He has a balance to his songwriting that I’m going to go ahead and say that no one today can achieve. It’s a very catchy, fantastically penned song, but it’s also really funny. Claudia Gonson’s heartbreaking questions are met with indifference or gleeful mocking by Merritt, who admittedly delights in her tears and sadness. And as if the comedy/tragedy balance wasn’t already out of wack already, he kills his wife in the end. You can’t make this stuff up, guys — and the reason you can’t is because you’re not Stephin Merritt.
Hopefully the new Magnetic Fields record will be out early next year.
