A friend asked me today for any musical suggestions I could give to add to a mix for a girl who likes Cat Power and Leonard Cohen. My immediate response was to point him to Ivana XL. So immediate, in fact, was this response that I didn’t realize until that moment how much Ivana reminds me of Cohen. Her last name does start with a C, so maybe…? Nah. Couldn’t be.

Last year I was blessed enough to have Ivana XL contribute to my Mixmas project. Her theme was “Songs on Divorce and Breaking Up” and included songs ranging from Elliott Smith to Lucinda Williams. It was little shock to find that her new song covers similar emotional ground. A play on hugs and kisses, “Ex.Oh.” hits hard with Ivana’s soft touch — a trait which makes me required by law to use the words “Cat Power” in this post.
On a side note, if Ivana’s still unsigned next time I post on her, I’m going to be very pissed at ever record label.
