Big thanks to The Tripwire for this cover. It’s one of the better things I’ve heard this week, and a perfect start to the weekend.
MP3: Mason Proper - Bike (Pink Floyd)
Yeah, I could talk a little about their cover of the zaniest Pink Floyd track, but instead I’ll tell you what the boys had to say:
We decided to do a cover, which is “not something we do normally.” I mean that both in the sense that we do not normally choose to do that, and we also do not do it in a normal fashion.
We once overheard somebody say, “no band could ever cover ‘Bike’ by Pink Floyd.” Always seeking to prove that total strangers talking loudly at other tables in New York restaurants are making incorrect statements, we accepted the challenge.
Upon diving in, several things occurred that shaped what our version became:
1. We discovered the song is even more insane than it initially seems to one’s ears.
2. While lazily attempting to figure out the odd times that the chords change in the song, we hit upon new, even stranger times at which to change chords.
3. The original song tends to slow down as it progresses. We decided to take the opposite approach and increase in speed as we went.
4. Four to six hands simultaneously playing a noisemaking suitcase is better than two.
5. Furthermore, we discovered the song is even MORE insane than we thought it was after the first discovery that the song was even more insane than it initially seems to one’s ears.
