I started listening to Black Before Red after seeing them pimped out on Oh No! Oh My!’s myspace page. Austin bands unite, huh? The suggestion was warranted, as what I’ve heard of their new album is really good.

“Underneath Gold” starts out with a bare-bones rhythm section backing before opening into some twin vocal/trumpet ba ba’s. It never strays too far from its simple structure, but it’s because it doesn’t have to do much else to be a good pop tune. “Matagorda” bangs it out on the piano in a bit of a Nillson-McCartney vibe.
