Radiohead Announce In Rainbows

Radiohead Announce In Rainbows

Radiohead just posted an announcement on their site saying their new album In Rainbows is available for preorder in digital and CD/LP formats. I’m wildly excited for this both as the new release by my favorite band and as an absolutely crazy thing for one of the biggest bands on the planet to do. Plus, you make your own price for the digital download. That more than makes up for the £40 price tag of the vinyl/CD/download bundle.

TONIGHT! Noisycrane at the Icehouse

TONIGHT! Noisycrane at the Icehouse

Noisycrane will be having their CD release show/party tonight at the Icehouse (412 Cross St) at 8pm. Bedtime and Tina Cofer are opening.

MP3: Noisycrane – Your Shape

Noisycrane are completely wonderful. Cody Swanson, one of Lexington’s rising stars, somehow combines together Jeff Mangum, Phil Elvrum, Colin Meloy … and early Stephin Merrit if you got him really drunk and hit him a few times. I guess given his age and general sound, I should probably say that Cody is Lexington’s Zach Condon. Yeah, that sound about right. Noisycrane is Lexington’s Beruit.

Big thanks to The Tripwire for this cover. It’s one of the better things I’ve heard this week, and a perfect start to the weekend.

MP3: Mason Proper – Bike (Pink Floyd)

Yeah, I could talk a little about their cover of the zaniest Pink Floyd track, but instead I’ll tell you what the boys had to say:

We decided to do a cover, which is “not something we do normally.” I mean that both in the sense that we do not normally choose to do that, and we also do not do it in a normal fashion.

We once overheard somebody say, “no band could ever cover ‘Bike’ by Pink Floyd.” Always seeking to prove that total strangers talking loudly at other tables in New York restaurants are making incorrect statements, we accepted the challenge.

Upon diving in, several things occurred that shaped what our version became:

1. We discovered the song is even more insane than it initially seems to one’s ears.
2. While lazily attempting to figure out the odd times that the chords change in the song, we hit upon new, even stranger times at which to change chords.
3. The original song tends to slow down as it progresses. We decided to take the opposite approach and increase in speed as we went.
4. Four to six hands simultaneously playing a noisemaking suitcase is better than two.
5. Furthermore, we discovered the song is even MORE insane than we thought it was after the first discovery that the song was even more insane than it initially seems to one’s ears.

Bloc Party @ the Madison Theater 9.26.07

Bloc Party @ the Madison Theater 9.26.07

By all accounts, I should have been too grumpy to enjoy any of Bloc Party’s set. I’ll admit that my main goal for the evening was to finally see Deerhoof. In fact, up until last night I didn’t even know Bloc Party was playing; I thought it was a Deerhoof headlining gig. So after one skipped class, three wrong turns and a show running earlier than expected, I was too late to catch the white whale of my concert attending life.

Luckily for me, Bloc Party were more than enough to ease my pain.

Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke is one of the best rock frontmen I’ve seen in a while. I don’t want to say that he carried the band, but looking back on it, I can’t really remember if anyone else had a microphone. He was engaging and really into the band’s performance.

Two encores and one on-stage marriage proposal (really!) later, I realized I’d managed to forget about the terrible few hours preceding Bloc Party and the fact that I missed Deerhoof again and just enjoy myself. And hey, lesson learned: leave early. Skip two classes if necessary. I won’t always luck out and have a cushion like Bloc Party to fall back on.

VIDEO: Full Grizzly Bear Show

(hint: hit play)

A kind fan recorded Grizzly Bear’s entire September 22 show in Ottawa and has posted it on Stage6. You might need a plugin to watch it, but it’s great viewing. You can download it too if you wish. You can find the hi-res version and a better way to download it by going here.

Speaking of Grizzly Bear, you can always check out the fantastic video of “Knife” from out Hot Freaks! party that Chris is streaming at his site or check in on that sneak peak/music video clip of their new song “Blackcurrant Jam” that I posted a few days ago. Also they have their EP “Friend” coming out soon, so keep an eye out for that!
