I’m off to the Forecastle Music Festival! I’ll be taking in some great music and art, including Scourge of the Sea and De La Soul! I’m reposting some of my favorite covers while I’m gone, but will have updates (and photos?) from the fest as soon as I’m able! For now, here’s this tune popularized by Steven Martin in the Jerk, as performed by the side-project of Whitney and Michael of Page France.
MP3: The Broadway Hush - Tonight You Belong To Me (Gene Austin)
Is it possible for a song to be a ‘lost gem’ immediately upon its recoring? The Broadway Hush’s excellent cover of Gene Austin’s “Tonight, You Belong to Me” just feels like a lost classic. It’s something that you expect to find tucked away on vinyl in your cool uncle’s record stash, not download from a blog. And for Whitney and Michael to record something so delightfully old fashioned (listen to the beauty of those nylon strings!) as a side project to their moderately large indie band speaks volumes about their love of music.
