Sunset Rubdown’s Random Spirit Lover has just proved that we were all wise to save a slot on our year-end list for it. Spencer’s genius (though never in question) is reaffirmed in twelve tracks, this first being my immediate favorite.

Hearing this song in a bootleg is no way to first experience Sunset Rubdown’s new album — but how could I resist? Though most of it came out well, the real magic of “The Mending of the Gown” isn’t in the riff or even the driving force of the song, it’s about the whole product. Spencer Krug would be an amazing musician if he just wrote good songs; he’s a great musician because he writes good songs and pieces every tiny bit together perfectly.
