The new John Vanderslice record is really good. I wrote and rewrote that beginning a few times before I went with the simplest way to put it. Emerald City is just the pre-birthday* kickoff I needed.

On the first listen, “Kookaburra” plays like Joseph Arthur covering a Sufjan Illinois outtake. In short, it sounds awesome. Vanderslice really plays up his voice (and backing vocalists — if they’re all John, then I’m really impressed) and has churned out a real gem here.
