I finally got to check out Knocked Up yesterday at the oh-so-freezing Movie Tavern. Seriously, did their fridge break and they had to keep the beers in the theater? Temperature aside, I thought it was a really great comedy and decided to translate that love into mix form.
Mixed Up
MP3: Colin Meloy – Baby Song
A pretty simple, straight-forward choice. This live recording of Meloy’s ode to his unborn child with girlfriend Carson Ellis is everything (good) an expecting or new parent is feeling: joy at the idea of the child and wonder at its seemingly miraculous creation. It’s a beautiful thing when two becomes three.
MP3: The Chalets – Sexy Mistake
OK. Here’s where the good vibes stop for a bit. I could have totally misread it, but I’m pretty sure the Chalets aren’t singing about that kind of “sexy mistake.” Still, the song title enough qualifies it for inclusion, as Knocked Up stems from a sexy (drunk) mistake.
MP3: Cold War Kids – Pregnant
How could I not?
MP3: Colin Meloy – Pregnant For The Last Time (Morrissey)
OK, I know. Another Meloy tune? It’s a Moz cover, and I think it’s earned its right here. I’m sure this movie did more to prevent underage and unprepared pregnancies than all Sex Ed classes combined. “Pregnant for the last time” indeed.
MP3: The B-52’s – Rock Lobster
“Rock Lobster” playing during the sex scene catapulted a funny moment into a histerical one. Hearing that famous riff creep into an awkward drunken moment of passion was enough to send me into belly laughs. My hat’s off to whoever decided that one.
MP3: The Flaming Lips – Oh, My Pregnant Head
Allison (Katherine Heigl) spends the middle to end of the movie acting rather looney tunes — fair play for any pregnant woman. I couldn’t find any songs called “I’m not insane, my hormones are,” so I went with “Oh, My Pregnant Head” to at least capture the craziness of the character.
MP3: Mazzy Star – She’s My Baby
I’m pushing it a bit here, but how could I not include some Mazzy Star if I have the opportunity?
MP3: Bill Callahan – A Man Needs A Woman Or A Man To Be A Man
The redemption song. The best part of the movie is seeing how being in love with Allison changes Ben (Seth Rogan) into an adult. Well, at least an adult-ish person. As Callahan points out, a man needs someone to love in order to truly be a man — that drive to protect brings out the best in all of us.
So for those of you who’ve seen it, what’d you think? Favorite moment?
