Loney, Dear @ Southgate House 3.20.07
March 26th, 2007 by Matt

The devil does not much care for Loney, Dear. But then again, he might just be the only one.
During the last few seconds of Loney, Dear’s performance at the Southgate House, a drunk older man wearing a black skullcap with devil horns came walked up to the front of the stage and insulted the band. He said that they “f***ing suck,” all the while giving them the middle finger.
I can almost, almost understand his reaction. Loney, Dear — great, though they were — were an odd fit for the upbeat dancefest that Of Montreal’s live show has become. But in fine form, the darling Swedes didn’t let it phase them one bit. As he strummed the last dying chords, Emil started repeating the man’s shouts: “We f***ing suck,” he crooned. It was as endearing as any phrase with the f-word can be.
Devil aside, Loney, Dear did a fine job. They really got to expand on the sound of Loney, Noir, including a masterful take on “I Am John,” and hopefully won a few supporters from the sold-out crowd. I was already a fan, but living in Kentucky, you rarely expect to catch one of your favorite Swedish bands. I was thrilled that it worked out, even though the devil didn’t seem to be on board with it.
