My first show at SXSW should have been the second time I’d seen Bishop Allen in as many weeks; but due to a few situations, they didn’t make it to last week’s show in Lexington. After their set at the Secretly Canadian / Jagjaguwar / Dead Oceans showcase, I’m almost glad.
Bishop Allen were a great way to kick off SXSW 2007, which was hands down the best musical experience of my life. The gang were now a strong six-piece, with Justin’s girlfriend and “Butterfly Nets” vocalist Darby rounding out the set.

Their setlist was pretty varied between Charm Schoole, their upcoming album and the EPs. They absolutely rocked the house with the two new songs they previewed, “Middle Management” and “Rain,” and finished on a beautiful note, with the Darby-led “Butterfly Nets.”
The three sister labels packed the Mohawk as tight as it could go — something which makes me very convident about Bishop Allen’s signing to Dead Oceans. The crowd was great and seemed to really enjoy the boys from Brooklyn. Looks like there are more than a few people out there anxiously awaiting their sophomore release this summer.
