Student Film: “Chopo”

March 14th, 2007 by Matt

Student Film’s new album is everything that their EPs hinted it might be. It’s a delightfully skatterbrained look at modern pop. Also, (I forgot to mention this part) they’re releasing an EP for every season of 2007. Winter is ready and available, and is pretty good; but for now I’ll focus on the album.

UPDATE: After noting the striking similarities between Student Film’s seasonal EPs and Bishop Allen’s monthly EPs, I remembered that both bands are fronted by men named Justin Rice. Commence indie-rock implosion.

Consider this a testament to both Student Film’s quality and my extreme absentmindedness. I put Sleeping Giant in my computer and loaded up iTunes, then proceeded to browse the internet. A minute later, when iTunes started playing the newly-ripped songs, I stopped in my internet tracks with a wide-eyed who-is-this-band look on my face. Oh, right. Student Film. I hate to use the Starlight Mints as a reference point since a.) they’re from the same town, b.) Allan from SM produced this album, and c.) Built on Squares was my cooking music today; but that doesn’t change the fact that this is totally up there in terms of wacky pop, just like their neighbors, the Starlight Mints.
