Andrew Bird: “Heretics”
February 3rd, 2007 by Matt

Not too long ago, I posted on the new Andrew Bird album, Armchair Apocrypha. I had to take that track (“Plasticities”) down, but here’s one that’s here to stay. The best part is, like his entire album, it’s golden.
MP3: Andrew Bird – Heretics
Last time I took the opportunity to wax amateur about the violin, Bird’s chosen instrument. This time, I’d like to draw your attention to the weapon with which he does his real damage: his lyrics. On “Heretics,” Bird re-establishes himself as one of the best lyricists of our day. With his often surrealist metaphors and alliterations, he’s well equipped to throw your mind reeling with his cadence and rhyme, almost like hip hop lyrics that have been pulled one step further towards poetry. But above it all is that perfect, head-turning chorus: “Thank God it’s fatal. Thank God it’s fatal.”
