The Ponys: “Double Vision”

January 12th, 2007

The new Ponys album Turn the Lights Out leaked a little bit ago and I’m loving it. It’s probably my favorite Matador release since last year’s Belle and Sebastian. I know we MP3 blogs are supposed to be all about posting as-yet-unheard songs when an album leaks, but I just can’t get over the one Matador was already offering for download. Sometimes labels are great like that.

Sometimes song titles practically do all the work for you. “Double Vision” is exactly that: a staggering, reeling rock song that leaves you unsure of your footing. From the very start, the delay on the guitar sets the song on a sideways tilt, while its uber-cool vocals give them that New York air (even though they’re from Chicago). This is music to get thrown out of a club to*

*For music to get thrown out of a bar to, pop in Tom Waits.

OK, seriously. Matt has over 170 comments on his Royal Court of Twee post. Did you vote in it yet?

I think the video for the Apples in Stereo’s song “Energy” should be on MTV2 today. First person to send me a link to watch it wins (even more of) my love. Same goes for last night’s Office episode!
