12 Days of Mixmas: Day 11
Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear

For so many music nerds, Grizzly Bear was the “it” band of 2006. Yellow House made it to the top 10 of Pitchfork’s and the New York Times’ year end lists, as well as worked its way into the hearts of countless fans.

MP3: Grizzly Bear- Knife

But I do have one problem with Ed: all I wanted for Christmas was a puppy, and he had to go and make his mix about dogs! Oh well; I’m willing to forgive him because his album (and mix) is so good.

“5 Songs About Dogs (and No Way Am I Going to Include ‘Who Let the Dogs Out’)” by Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear

Well–I love dogs. I’ve realized this more and more recently, and in the past year and a half I’ve owned my current dog (see picture …) I’ve realized how much of an insane dog freak I am. Good thing so much good music is about dogs, so much so I could put together a mini mix for one of my favorite blogs, You Ain’t No Picasso, well I Ain’t No Cat Lover, (allergic)–so without further ado.

MP3: El Perro Del Mar – Dog
Well, she’s swedish, her name means “dog of the sea” in spanish and she has a song called Dog. That’s pretty d*mn dog oriented, but beyond that, I’ve grown borderline unhealthy with her debut album. It’s depressing, yet catchy and well, somehow it speaks to me, particularly this song.

MP3: Liz Phair – Dogs of LA
Jesus I was a Liz Phreak in highschool. Get it? Phair, Freak, PHREAK?!?! Ok, so this is on her less good album Whip-Smart, but it’s still good compared to her self titled crap fest that came out a few years ago and got played to death on VH1. Let’s remember her good times, this one undulates like crazy in a way I like.

MP3: Animal Collective – Doggy
I think I might be in the minority but their Campfire Song EP/album is one of my favorite AC albums out there, I guess I just like the lo-fi vibe of it all and I think the songs meander is such beautiful original ways. Check it out if you haven’t. Minimal yelping which is always a plus in my book.

MP3: Cat Power – Salty Dog
Dog and Cat? Cat and Dog? Together at last? Yes! Cat power has lost a lot of weight recently, has anyone noticed? It’s because she went off the bottle. She looks cute. I said hi to her at a french festival this past summer we both played with, and she was sipping tea and said hi back! WHEEEE.

MP3: Iggy Pop and the Stooges – I Wanna Be Your Dog
Or is it just a plain ol’ Stooges track; I can’t remember, regardless—contrary to popular belief I like a bit of punk. Tis true, I’m definitely on the mellower side of the music tip, but I love some Stooges tracks and this happens to be one of them. This sort of f*cks up the mellow flow of my dog walking mix, but whatever, it’s good and probably nobody downloads all the tracks and listens to them in order/entirity anyway, so it’s not really an issue. It’s good as millions of people have established in the past 30 years, I’m just saying it again. Stooges=good.
