Time for the Louisville love. Your Black Star have been causing some waves internationally, but will always be hometown heroes to me. Their new album, Sound from the Ground, comes out tomorrow, but here’s a preview.
MP3: Your Black Star – Oh Jesus
There must be something in the water around here. For some reason, Kentucky is producing some pretty decent retro-rock as of late. VHS or Beta’s last album single-handedly revived the dance-punk genre and Parlour Boys have been getting nothing but love from the online community. Now it looks like it’s Your Black Star’s turn. “Oh Jesus” is a bit of Cure-loving wrapped up in some guitar work that harkens to fellow Louisvillians (is that what they’re called?) VHS or Beta.
Your Black Star on Myspace (check out “Lousy Smarch Weather,” which Kristine got me into a good ways back)
I’d like to wish an extra-special happy birthday to my good friend Cameron! Not only is she my co-DJ and the person who introduced me to my girlfriend, but she’s a good pal. If you’re able, check out our show tomorrow on WRFL from 2-4AM EST. You can stream it from WRFL881.org. I’ll be playing some birthday themed songs and generally making a dork out of myself (as always!).
