The Heavy Blinkers: “Tribute to Sparrow”

October 2nd, 2006

While I spent the first listens under the impression that this was a new The Heavy Blinkers song, I eventually came to realize it’s from their 2003 release, Intercontinental Pop Exchange, Vol. 3 Though it might be old to a few of you, it’s as fresh as ever to me. Still, a song of this quality deserves any publicity that it can gather.

Now I know what would happen if Sufjan Stevens-circa-Seven Swans and the guys from Kite Flying Society set sail on a wooden raft. Eventually someone would get bored and compiment the lazy pace of their trip with some gentle banjo work, and the resulting song would sound pretty much like “Tribute to Sparrow.” From there, the song unfolds quite as you might imagine: great complimentary female vocals and a dash of piano to top it all off. It’s as beautiful as it is gentle.

I just saw The Science of Sleep and am left with a head full of questions. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, it’s just that it’s quite the head-scratcher. Expect a post soon on their bossa nova-ish cover of the Velvet Underground’s “After Hours” (which, after many lyrical changes turned into “If You Rescue Me”).
