Video: The Hidden Cameras: “Awoo”

September 18th, 2006 by Matt

In honor of Pitchfork trashing one of the best albums of the year, I figured I’d post the title track and the curious video that accompanies it.

MP3: Hidden Cameras – Awoo
The current Canadian music scene would make far less sense had the Hidden Cameras never formed. Setting aside the fact that they’re a part of that incestuous group of musicians (Owen “Final Fantasy” Pallett, for example), they also play a vital role in the Canuck ecosystem. After all, every country needs “gay church folk music,” right? But “Awoo” continues a trend of poppification for the band. I have a bad habit of comparing every album of theirs to Ecce Homo, their first, and this time around is no different. While they maintain the ‘gay’ and ‘folk’ bits, there’s also a dash of that proto-pop from the early 60s. Slow this song down a hair, give it lame british vocals and you’ve got a hit in 1965; and as someone who was raised on oldies, I couldn’t be happier.

Buy Awoo on Amazon.

May I also suggest this live video by the Hidden Cameras and all the others that go along with it?
