M Coast! Now there’s a quick way to get the attention of anyone who follows the E6/Athens group of musicians. On their new album, Say It In Slang, M. Coast (which is basically Andy Gonzales, ex-Of Montreal and Music Tapes) is joined by Derek Almstead of Circulatory System and also ex-Of Montreal. Now that we’ve linked the E6 family tree even tighter, let’s get on to the tunes.

Apparently Derek and Andy shared songwriting duties on this new album, and it looks like that paid off in spades. “Out of the Water” is rocking, yet gentle; full of the more raw quality that seems to have escaped most E6 bands as of late. It’s not hard to picture this as a lost early Elf Power tune, or a direction the Apples in Stereo could have easily taken after Fun Trick Noisemaker. Curiously, “Sailing Around the World” could hardly be more different. It’s soft and gentle, full of strings and horns.
