My thank-God-I-woke-up-today moment yesterday was receiving Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3′ Ole! Tarantula. I’m not the biggest Robyn buff in the world, but he’s got a lot of stuff that I love. On this one he’s joined by “the Venus 3,” Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, and Bill Rieflin of R.E.M/The Minus 5. The result is quite possibily one of the most solid album that has touched my ears in a long time.

“Museum of Sex” has a great saxophone riff, and Robyn Hitchcock knows it. He tells his saxophonist to let him hear it again more than a couple of times throughout the song. But rather than seeming corny, it just comes off as timeless; and in a way that’s the feel of the entire album. Robyn Hitchcock isn’t dated, old or passe–he’s timeless. His is a style and skill that can turn even a seemingly lighthearted piece about a museum of sex into a song that will have a life far longer than its creator.
