De Novo Dahl: “Shout”

August 24th, 2006

Tonight I’ll be catching the next installment of my “Nashville week” in Lexington: De Novo Dahl. They’ve just wrapped up work on their new album, and are doing a string of dates to celebrate. I’ve been told that their show in Nashville last week was awe-inspiring, so I’m really hoping this one turns out just as well. Anyone wanting to catch them can do so tonight at The Dame at 9PM with the High Water Marks opening.

I’m a big believer that one thing that can make good music even better is understanding the details surrounding it. While not written as a direct response to De Novo Dahl’s lineup change from last year, “Shout” serves as both a positive message to their fans and a reaffirmation to the band as to why they do what they do. Within the songs’ three minute runtime, they cram more positive messages and cathartic instructions than an entire Tony Robbins tome could ever hope to contain. Top that off with an introduction that’s eerily reminiscent of the opening vocals of Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up,” and you’ve got one of the best songs of the year.
