We skipped the last two songs of Tapes ‘n Tapes to get a good spot for Pitchfork’s favorite Son, Danielson. Not being too familiar with his work beyond Ships I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Thankfully before we left to catch the Jens Lekman, he played my three favorite songs off the new album right off the bat: “Cast It At The Setting Sun,” “Bloodbook On The Halfshell,” and “Did I Step On Your Trumpet?”
I hate to make the obvious comparison, but it was a lot like watching Sufjan and his Illinoisemakers on the Illinois tour. Everyone was in matching uniforms and had their job down perfectly. The only difference was that Sufjan is more of a crooner than a screamer. Daniel got pretty into it–which was a welcome change.
