Boo Hoo: “Eff the Ineffable”

July 27th, 2006

As I prepare myself mentally and physically for the Pitchfork Music Festival, I’m having less and less time to spend on YANP. This lack of time is also closely related to a certain ladyfriend, but that’s a topic for another day. Anyways, this is why I was particularly pleased when I received an email about “Montreal’s finest,” Boo Hoo. The recording quality isn’t the best, but the songs are pretty promising.

Boo Hoo belong in the same category as The Lovely Feathers: bands who most likely really enjoyed the Unicorns, but then decided to take those lessons and apply them to a totally different type of music. The majority of their music (”Eff..” might be a bad example) is more closely resembles a poppier Mclusky–if there ever was such a thing. It’s not as frantic as the Lovely Feathers, but the energy is still there. More than anything, Boo Hoo seem content to stick to their strengths on most songs. Who knows what’ll happen if they should ever really cut loose.
