MP3: The Lucksmiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (The Smiths)
The Smiths are right up there with Elliott Smith in terms of protective fans. Any time someone records a sub-par cover of either’s work, you can bet it’ll be met with instant umbrage by the their fanbase–and not entirely without reason. With a song like “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out,” there’s a lot of room to mess things up. Striking just the right balance between hopelessness and optimism is a perspective that would elude most bands.
Paired with Karen Morcombe on vocals, The Lucksmiths have proved that they are not “most bands.” Are they Moz? No, but then again, no one ever said that they have to be. Instead, they’ve turned one of the Smiths’ signature works into a startlingly beautiful duet. When they sing “to die by your side would be a heavenly way to die,” you genuinely believe that they don’t think it would be much of a setback for the two of them.
