I feel like I owe you an appology. You see, I feel I’ve been lax in my duties. If I were really a good blogger, I would have been informing you more about the new BOAT album, Songs That You Might Not Like. Sure, I’ve posted on it once or twice, but now that it’s in my hands, I can’t tell you what a fool I’ve been. Maybe NPR could–they picked BOAT for their latest All Songs Considered. Nicely done, NPR; very nicely done, BOAT.

There are a lot of ways for music to be “honest.” Saying “my dad left when I was three” is honest, yes; but so is being true to your personality. If you’re a fun loving guy, don’t wear goth makeup and sing about gloom and doom. The impression that I get from Songs That You Might Not Like–itself a bit of humble honesty–is that David Crane of BOAT is nothing if not an honest musician. I can’t speak to the validity of the facts within his songs, but either he or his imaginary protagonists share a side of them that most might feel the need to hide with metaphor or mask with flowered language. Similarly, just because a topic might be a bit sensitive or even a little sad, like his father’s departure in “Clogged Castle,” he doesn’t stray too far from the heart of the album, and presumably the heart of himself. It’s a pop album that’s never bogged down by a lack of focus. It’s very Tullycraft and very much a part of the quirky-pop movement that’s gathered a devoted following over the past decade.

Apparently I was mentioned in less than glowing terms in the newest edition of DIW Magazine. I’m going to the store today to see if I can pick one up. On the highly likely chance that I don’t make it out before I have to do my radio show, can someone let me know what was said? Don’t worry, it’ll probably only depress me for a couple hours.
